Tato norma se vztahuje na kódování barev RGB při komunikaci, které používají systémy výpočetní techniky a podobné aplikace. Definuje příslušné referenční podmínky. Pokud se skutečné podmínky liší od referenčních podmínek, mohou vyžadovat další informace, ty však nejsou součástí této normy. Součástí této normy nejsou ani dodatečné transformace bodu bílé. Barevný prostor scRGB je rozšířením prostoru sRGB a je s ním kompatibilní.
