In recent years significant research and development aimed at rail rolling contact fatigue (RCF) has been conducted, driven by the increasing frequency of RCF incidents experienced by railways.Furthermore, the way in which UIC Leaflet 721, 3rd edition, has been employed varies between infrastructure managers across Europe. With this new knowledge, a systematic approach to combine the experience from the current operational situation and respective degradation models has also been included. This IRS therefore gives an overview on the topic of rail grade selection. For more detailed information on specific topics, please refer to the Reference documents - page 5.It integrates in full or in part the following UIC leaflets:- UIC Leaflet 721It aims to complement the following standards:- EN 13674-1:2011+A1:2017: Railway applications - Track - Rail - Part 1: Vignole railway rails 46 kg/m and above- EN 13674-2:2019: Railway applications - Track - Rail - Part 2: Switch and crossing rail used in conjunction with Vignole railway rails 46 kg/m and above- EN 13674-3:2006+A1:2010: Railway applications - Track - Rail - Part 3: Check rails- EN 13674-4:2019: Railway applications - Track - Rail - Part 4: Vignole railway rails from 27 kg/m to, but excluding 46 kg/m
