The aim of this study is to assess occurrence and the effects of overloads on railway infrastructure in Finland. In former study the load effects of railway traffic were assessed in general with no special attention on overloaded axles. The study was conducted with stochastic methods by simulation of trains based on collected monitoring data. In this study the focus is on overloaded axles and the trains with overloaded axles are under consideration. The data of study consists of collection of trains with at least one overloaded axle. In addition of overloaded axles and bogies, the simulation of this study takes account of the occurrence of series of overloaded axles. The focus of this study is to assess the effects of overloaded trains in comparison to characteristic trains as characteristic trains should represent the load effecting on railway infrastructure. Therefore, the selection for comparison to characteristic trains is made to have equal model with which to compare the traffic with overloaded axles in different monitoring points. This study is divided in two phases. In first phase (a) the occurrence and distributions of overloaded axles is assessed, and the outline of consecutive phases are determined. The first phase is preliminary work for the programming of second phase. In first phase there is a need to find the most interesting monitoring points and crucial factors for the most adverse effects from which the traffic is constructed for simulation of structural effects of overloads. In the second phase the simulation of railway traffic with overloaded axles is done for selected structures. The input data for simulation is determined in phase a) in which the statistical distribution for relevant traffic characteristics were assessed. The simulation program is written with MathCad-software.In simulation, the statistical distributions achieved in phase a) are used to generate the traffic with overloaded axles. The generated traffic is driven stepwise over the bridge and the internal forces of structures are recorded. The purpose of the simulation is to assess the effect of railroad traffic with overloaded axles on fatigue of certain structures. The influence lines for simulation are selected to represent the problematic connections of existing steel bridges. The simulation results are compared with the fatigue effects of characteristic trains to assess the overall level of the effects of overloaded axles.
