UIC project 2018/RSF/570 - "Composite brake block behaviour under winter conditions" aims to ensure the safe operation of freight trains consisting of wagons fitted with CBBs on the lines of the Northern Countries under harsh winter weather conditions. 

The aims of the project are:

- the definition of the safe conditions for the use of composite brake blocks (CBBs) considering:

• . the analysis of the reports of the occurred incidents,
• . the results of the winter tests already made by Nordic railway operators and NSAs,
• . the mitigation measures proposed by Nordic railway operators;
• - - assessment of the need for an update of
• . the current test programme for the winter braking properties of composite brake blocks or
• . the operational procedures for the usage of wagons equipped with CBBs under harsh winter condition and
• - the validation of the proposed solutions by a test campaign.
