Die Assoziation IEEE, die sich der Unterstützung von Innovationen und vollkommenen Technologien im Interesse der Menschheit widmet, ist die größte technische Fachgesellschaft. Ihr Zweck ist den Spezialisten in Elektrotechnik, Elektronik und EDV-Technologien sowie in zusammenhängenden Bereichen der Wissenschaft und Technologie zu dienen, die zu Bestandteilen der modernen Zivilisation gehören. Die Wurzeln der Gesellschaft IEEE reichen bis zum Jahr 1884 zurück, als die Elektrizität die Gesellschaft bedeutsam zu beeinflussen begann. Damals existierte eine eingeführte elektrotechnische Branche, und zwar der Telegraf, der seit 40. Jahren des 19. Jahrhunderts die Welt mit Kommunikationsdatensystem schneller verbunden hat, als der Verkehr. Die Telefonindustrie sowie die energetische und Leichtindustrie stand erst am Anfang.
